Border closure refers to the travel restrictions outside the country or the complete closing of borders by a government. A government may decide to close its borders for many reasons that it finds fit, like protecting the country against any harm or development of its internal affairs. Closure of border was most prevalent during the recent Covid-19 pandemic as this disease was not confined to a single country. The virus responsible for this global pandemic – the coronavirus- caused the most significant and most protracted border closure crisis in history.

The whole world closed its borders on each other to control and overcome the spread of the coronavirus, but this closure had some devastating effects on the world itself. Border closure might seem like a good decision temporarily, but it hampers many other factors. The border closure has the biggest slam on international trading and import/export, which devastates the country’s economy. It affects the lives of these people who have businesses overseas or are migrants to a country. It also affects the students pursuing studies abroad. As a result, closing borders shatter the country’s economy and cause hindrance in the peaceful environment globally.

Closing the borders hamper the process of trading between countries. Now that the world has become a global village, all kinds of food items, vegetables, and fruits are accessible worldwide. You could be living in The USA but still enjoy the fruits of tropical countries. Similarly, all vegetables and fruits are also available in all the seasons regardless of the season they grow in. The same goes for vegetables. All this is possible only through international trading. If the borders are closed, this trade is stopped, and hence, the availability of food becomes dainty. The nourishment for the people and their health suffers in this way. International trading is fundamental in today’s time for providing the best living facilities and health sources to the people.

As the border restrictions afflict, food production and distribution suffer drastically. Food production may be the same, but due to border restrictions, the grown food that suppose to be exported to generate high profit is also blocked. The population waiting on imported food items suffers from the non-availability and scarcity. Thus, closing borders results in hunger, malnutrition, and insufficient nourishment. To prevent such a situation, the complete closure of borders must be avoided, and some other way of coping with the reason leading to border closure must be adopted.

Another impact of closed borders is that it affects the life-long earnings of people settled abroad. People migrate to advanced, developed countries to earn well for their families. To secure their kids’ future, people leave their home country and prefer settling abroad. When borders close, immigrants may be deported and forced to return to their homelands without any reason. Such immigrants are compelled to leave their life-long earnings in the country they migrated to and move back to their home state. This is a devastating situation for a hard worker, a commoner, who spends his whole life earning and progressing and has nothing in the blink of an eye. Even if the immigrant moves back to his country, he has no investment to establish himself there. He was not given his own money and assets due to border closure.

Border closure might seem like a temporary solution, but it creates more problems for poor people. Closed borders hamper the economy and peace of the country in various ways. Before considering border closures, the governments should look at all the factors that will be affected negatively by it.
